Alzheimer's disease is a type of
dementia that causes problem with memory, thinking and behaviour. It is a
degenerative disease that slowly and progressively destroys brain cells.
Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time and becoming severe
enough to interfere with daily tasks. Elderly who had Alzheimer’s disease may
wandering around their residential area and forget the way back to their home. They
need someone to accompany them for most of the time. Most people need to go to
work and they can’t monitor the elderly for most of the time. They also don’t
have much money to pay the health care assistant to take care of the elderly. This project aims to develop a prototype of
falling detection and location tracking system using Global System for Mobile
Communication (GSM), Global Positioning System (GPS) and sensor to detect the
elderly movement while the guardian is not around. This
project consists of two parts which are hardware design and software
development. For hardware design, the system is controlled by a microcontroller
which is in Arduino UNO board. Sensor is used as the input of the
microcontroller. Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) and Global
Positioning System (GPS) is preferred in the wireless communication because of
the increasing use of mobile phone. For Software development, Arduino Compiler
is used to program the microcontroller to enable the function of detecting
falling movement and track the location of the elderly and then inform the
guardian by using SMS when something strange happen to the elderly when he or
she is alone.
The
device will be in a form of wristband which had been installed with sensor,
Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) and Global Positioning System
(GPS). It can detect falling movement from the elderly and it also can detect
their location. This system also will send the alert message to the guardian
when falling movement is detected and it also will send the location of the
elderly for the guardian to check on them. This device will be used to help the
elderly guardians who need to go to work and at the same time they need to
monitor the elderly who had Alzheimer. If something happen to the elderly, the
system will send the alert message directly to them.
